During her recent series of appearances in New York City, we had the chance to sit down with prolific lolita model, Kawaii Ambassador, and Japan Lolita Association president, Misako Aoki.

Sitting with Misako in Alice’s Tea Cup – a small teahouse in the Upper East Side of Manhattan – I notice her attitude is markedly different from when I had met her two days earlier, while she was being subsumed by a crowd of her biggest fans. Her trademark kindness and beauty remain, but she seems less reserved, as if the “character” of being a demure lolita president has melted away a bit. In its place is a pure enthusiasm for lolita fashion, and a mockery of my inability to eat a scone.

Check out the full interview to learn more about her ambitions for lolita fashion’s international expansion, how she got started as a model, and what she thinks the future of lolita fashion holds.
